Version 3.1 is now available

The newest update to PDX Bus is now available in the app store.  This contains several updates and fixes that were suggested by people that commented on this blog:

Version 3.1 contains several user-requested features, including:
  • Auto-refesh - arrivals will auto-refresh every minute (until the phone goes to sleep). [Suggested by Gordon and muffin man]
  • New colorful icons [Suggested by me]
  • Updated map integration -added back an old feature in a different way - each location on the map can be opened in Google maps, so you can get directions or search for nearby businesses. [Suggested by jwdoom]
  • More Trip Planner options, and a new screen to change them [Suggested by jwdoom]
  • Improved accessibility - VoiceOver text is now more logical. (VoiceOver is also better with iPhone OS 3.1 as it will also read out the stop names). [Suggested by Gordon]
  • Network diagnostics - if PDX Bus does not get any data it can display information about what went wrong. [Added as a result of question from Beth and Adam]
  • Some bug fixes (including fixing the crash when you remove the last bookmark). [Found by Anonymous].
  • There are also new settings to turn off the icons, change the default trip planner options, and turn off auto-refresh.

Funny behaviour when I try to look at a stop in the Map application. Instead of going right to the map program, it looks like you're launching a web broswer windows first, which in turn launches map.

Somewhere the stop name gets lost, so the stop is simply named "location" when it finally does open in Map application.

Portland Cyclist - I agree, so I have a list of excuses:

- The iPhone SDK does not appear to allow a better way to open maps. You basically tell Safari to open a web page that starts with maps.google.com, then safari opens a Google map. It is pretty lame, but this is the way to do it (or was with the 2.2 SDK). I will take a look to see if I can improve it.
- It says "location" as I could not consistently get it to work with any other text.

BTW - this exactly how it used to work before integrating the maps into the app. I could work on the "location" text to try to get it to work.

I knew the map application opens via a URL that points to the maps.google.com site. The part that's wierd is that with most other apps doong this, you see Safari opening first before it hands off to the Map application. In PDX Bus you do...

errr... what I meant to say is you DON'T see Safari open first when other apps hand off to the Map program -- it just looks weird in PDX Bus becasue you do...

I took your suggestion to delete and reinstall and now the trip planner works. Thanks!

thanks for the great app, i use it all the time. the newest version has been giving me trouble though. it tells me "network errors" each time i open the application, until i open safari, prove i have internet, then go back and it shows results.

Towski - sorry about that. Someone else also had this problem. I submitted a fix to Apple last Tuesday, so we just need to wait for 3.1.1 which I hope will fix it.

Towski - the latest update should fix the connectivity issues, but it does require iPhone OS 3.1 to work (this was my mistake).
